What is the strength of human hair?

Composition hair

Hair is 88 percent protein by composition. The fiber's strength of the link occurs between the hydrogen bonds, salt, sugar and cystine in the well. (See Reference 3)

Measurement of force

Tensile strength can be measured directly in a laboratory with counter traction. (See Reference 2 Resources and 2)

What is the force?

A strand of human hair healthy can carry about 3 oz (100 g O) weight alone. The whole head can hold 12 tons of weight. (See Resource 1) hair can be stretched up to 20 percent (dry) and 50 percent (wet basis) of its normal length before it breaks. (See Reference 1)

Factors affecting the strength of

Relax in the permanent hair color and many chemicals reduce the tensile strength of all the hair. High porosity, or the ability of the hair to take in water, has been correlated with the tensile strength lower. (See Reference 2)

Meaning

Hair tensile test force is used in the cosmetic industry to determine the overall effectiveness of products such as shampoos, conditioners and chemical treatments. Products that affect the strength of the hair is not desirable. (See Reference 2 Resources and 2)
